The Little Pine Baseline Survey provides an inventory of the unique plants and animals of the area and also of how they are related with each other.
Conducted in the spring and summer of 2002, the survey revealed that Little Pine was home to:
- 7 Natural Communities
- 10 acres of Old Growth forest
- 4 wetlands
- Several perennial, intermittent and ephemeral streams
- 208 plant species, including 12 on the North Carolina Natural Heritage
Program (NCNHP) Rare or Watch List
- 17 animals, including 7 on the NCNHP Rare or Watch List
- Apparently suitable habitat for 21 animals on the Rare or Watch List
Using results the baseline survey, The Preserve Communities established perpetual conservation easements within Little Pine that protect one of the most dramatic and biologically diverse landscapes in North America.
